30 days of {truth} – Forgiveness & Hope

by Hannah

For those who didn’t see my original post, I am doing a little series of responses to the writing prompts of 30 Days of Truth. See them all here.

As I’ve looked more closely at the list of prompt, I’ve found that there are some I would rather not address at all because they are too personal for this blog, and others I will answer just briefly. Some of these feel to me more like topics to have a long, one-on-one chat about over coffee (or wine…).

“Something you have to forgive yourself for.”

Being too critical, and skeptical, and letting go of things I should have held on to.

“Something you have to forgive someone for.”

Not believing in me, and therefore causing me to doubt myself as well. Though this is more something I’ve had to forgive someone for- I think I can say that I have now.

“Something you hope to do in your life.”

Well as you know, I have a whole list of things I want to do in my life. But I think more than anything I want to leave a legacy. I love the quote by William James, “The great use of life is to spend it for something that will outlast it.” I want to impact the world (even if only for a few people) in a positive way- a way that speaks of love, beauty, peace and kindness.

“Something you hope you never have to do.”

Lose a child. Oh it hurts my heart to think of this one, for so many reasons.

Forgiveness, especially for oneself, goes hand-in-hand with hope. Barring a few specific instances, forgiveness for others has never been a huge struggle for me. I am thankful for that. Forgiving myself for mistakes I have made in the past has never been as easy. I think we are always hardest on ourselves. But freedom, and hope, are impossible without forgiveness. Over time I’ve learned that holding on to past hurts or mistakes does not productive, and in no way makes anything better. Letting go, moving forward, is the only way to grow from those experiences and live with hope- looking ahead rather than to the past.

{p.s.- This morning I posted images from a recent wedding inspiration shoot over here on my photography blog.}
