So here we are at the end of the August Break. August itself was anything but a break- what a crazy month it has been around here! When I first heard about the idea from Susannah Conway, I loved it, but I had no idea how much it would change the way I think about my blog and what I want it to be. Stepping back and spending a month focusing on posting images, often ones simply shot with my iPhone, I have thought a lot about why I write, and blog, and what direction I want to take it in the future.

I have ideas bouncing all over in my head but in short, I definitely want to write more. So that is what I plan to do. This blog started {almost 3 years ago now!} as a documentation of family life, and evolved with me as I’ve grown as a mother, an artist and a businesswoman. There are really no lines between my family life and my art and my career and my writing… it is all intertwined. I am still seeking my equipoise, and I want to share more of the journey with whoever would like to read it.

I recently stumbled upon this article at CopyBlogger, “10 Steps to Becoming a Better Writer”. I clicked the link to it, thinking it would give me some great tips to learn to focus and organize my writing better, and found that it just says to write. And I’m thinking, oh yeah, that. But I took it to heart, and I have been intentional about writing more. In doing so my thoughts have become more organized, and I have even been more inspired in my photography. And I have had idea after idea about blogging more thoughtfully and intentionally. I feel excited about my blog again, and I can’t wait to share some of my thoughts with you!

It started raining, but the sun was out, and I said, “Oh maybe there will be a rainbow” and Jackie turned around and said “There it is!”

august break, no.29: Holga love.

by Hannah

This is another roll from the Holga that has been through a lot. I wasn’t sure if any of them would come out, because I dropped the camera at one point, and the back popped off in bright sunlight. I was definitely pleasantly surprised by the lovely mysterious imperfection of these.
Shooting with this camera has really influenced me so much as a photographer, and changed the way I shoot and how I think about my work. Never knowing exactly what I’m going to get, and only having 12 shots on a roll of film, adds a quality of excitement and anticipation to the process. Having no settings or focus, and working in square format, makes me focus solely on my composition, and that has made me more intentional in all of my work.

This roll of TMAX400, from the Holga, was accidentally exposed to some light while in the camera (I think), and got stuck at one point, so I had to open it up in the pitch-black bathroom and feel my way to fixing it.
So it went through a lot, but there were still a few gems…

slow down.

I love my Holga, but am definitely still getting used to it.

I am young. I am determined. I am driven. I am passionate. I am me.

I see a future full of promise…

A few of my boys. Seth is about to cut a huge molar and has been so miserable. Don’t you love the curls?

I think he saw a truck or something here-

Manny took this one of me. He captured exactly how I feel- tired, and blissful.
These were all taken in downtown West Palm Beach, FL.

august break, no.26: film

by Hannah

I got a whole bunch of film back from my new lab today- so exciting! I’m going to space it out here so it lasts longer : )

Here are the first few:

We went to the Jack Johnson show this evening. On the way there, it started raining a little. I kept hoping it would stop soon. We got out, walked forever from where we parked up to the amphitheater, and it kept raining. We stood under an overhang for a while where they were selling t-shirts. It was still raining. I had Seth in the Ergo carrier and the hood over his head, which he wasn’t a fan of. We heard the music, but never made it to the lawn, never actually saw Jack Johnson. We were all getting wet, and there was no end to it in sight, so we had to do the “parent thing”, and we left.
I am a little bit heartbroken about this. We talked in the car about how 5 years ago, we would have stood there in the rain all night, enjoying the music and getting soaked. We probably still would have today, but not with our one year old getting soaked too. Our lives have changed. I’m sad I missed the concert (and spent the money), of course. But I am not the slightest bit sorry that our lives are so different now.
We went out to dinner after we left, and Seth was a total joy the entire time- he had us laughing so much. He danced to the music that was playing the restaurant, and kept talking and laughing and doing silly things. If we count “One,” “Two…”, he’ll yell out, “Theee!”. He knows when he’s being silly now, and is such a ham. He is also so sweet and sensitive. He learned the word “boo-boo” recently, and will kiss your’s if he notices it, without being prompted.
He ate french fries tonight. My standards have dramatically changed in light of having a child who doesn’t always want to eat anything at all, and is on the lower side of the growth charts. One thing motherhood has taught me is to be flexible and easy on myself about certain things.
Oh, it has taught me so much.

I have been using the August Break for brainstorming, planning, and re-thinking this space, and my career in general really, and I have so many ideas. Starting September 1st, I will be back with “normal” posts and new content!

Tonight we got away for a little date night- it was just what we needed!

tiny cupcake
Isn’t this the cutest thing? A tiny “cupcake”, which was really just wonderful solid chocolate, with an orca whale on it :)

He can always make me laugh.
{aside- this cool mural covers the side of a local surf shop. I love mural and other public art.}

{The August Break is, for me, about not feeling like I have to write here- pictures each day will do (but there are no rules of course, so I can write too if I feel like it!) Basically I am relaxing more in August, and letting summer be summer.
This idea is from the talented Susannah Conway. Click here for more info and a list of participating bloggers.}

This is the biggest avocado ever. Okay, not ever. But it’s certainly the biggest in my personal experience. Grown and modeled by my lovely mother-in-law, Jackie.

it's just been one of those days...

Today was clouded with some intense low back pain. I didn’t get much of anything done, as walking around is pretty painful right now. I’m sure a good night’s sleep and some more of the above will make me feel like a new woman by morning :)
