Do you want to shoot film?

by Hannah

If you follow my blog and my work, you know that I seriously love shooting film. The process, the look and feel, the honesty and tangibility of it, just gets me every time.

Suzie Chaney, one of my fellow fPOE team members, is teaching Shooting the Breeze, a unique online workshop on shooting film. It starts on March 7th, and will be an excellent resource for anyone wishing to get started shooting film, or dust off that camera you haven’t used in years, or simply be part of a community of other film shooters. I encourage you to check it out!

Summer is still here…

by Hannah

…but once in a while there is still a slight chill in the breeze that reminds me that it is technically Fall. We’re loving our outdoor time as a family. Our favorite thing lately is taking a picnic dinner to the beach and staying until sunset. It is so peaceful and not very hot at the time of day.

I just posted some personal work on film over on my photography blog. Take a look.

I found a local lab that I like- so very exciting! I still plan to use Richard Photo Lab for some things- probably weddings- because they are seriously top notch, but for personal work and portrait sessions, I am so happy that I can just drop my film off and get it the same day or next morning. They did a lovely job on the scans, no?

I am so thankful for photography right now- keeping me grounded in a sea of chaos. (Chaos is quite an odd word…)

My grandmother is turning 86 on Friday. She is awesome, and played such a significant role in my upbringing. I am so thankful for my relationship with her. Seth and I will be spending a few days with her and my parents this weekend to celebrate.

I am determined to fit some beach time into our weekend while we’re there. I like the beaches in my home town better than the ones down here. I just want to soak up the sun and play in the sand right now. I have a beach photo session this Thursday as well- working at the beach is great, too ;)

How is your week going?

august break, no.29: Holga love.

by Hannah

This is another roll from the Holga that has been through a lot. I wasn’t sure if any of them would come out, because I dropped the camera at one point, and the back popped off in bright sunlight. I was definitely pleasantly surprised by the lovely mysterious imperfection of these.
Shooting with this camera has really influenced me so much as a photographer, and changed the way I shoot and how I think about my work. Never knowing exactly what I’m going to get, and only having 12 shots on a roll of film, adds a quality of excitement and anticipation to the process. Having no settings or focus, and working in square format, makes me focus solely on my composition, and that has made me more intentional in all of my work.

~~~~~~~~~
We went to the Jack Johnson show this evening. On the way there, it started raining a little. I kept hoping it would stop soon. We got out, walked forever from where we parked up to the amphitheater, and it kept raining. We stood under an overhang for a while where they were selling t-shirts. It was still raining. I had Seth in the Ergo carrier and the hood over his head, which he wasn’t a fan of. We heard the music, but never made it to the lawn, never actually saw Jack Johnson. We were all getting wet, and there was no end to it in sight, so we had to do the “parent thing”, and we left.
I am a little bit heartbroken about this. We talked in the car about how 5 years ago, we would have stood there in the rain all night, enjoying the music and getting soaked. We probably still would have today, but not with our one year old getting soaked too. Our lives have changed. I’m sad I missed the concert (and spent the money), of course. But I am not the slightest bit sorry that our lives are so different now.
We went out to dinner after we left, and Seth was a total joy the entire time- he had us laughing so much. He danced to the music that was playing the restaurant, and kept talking and laughing and doing silly things. If we count “One,” “Two…”, he’ll yell out, “Theee!”. He knows when he’s being silly now, and is such a ham. He is also so sweet and sensitive. He learned the word “boo-boo” recently, and will kiss your’s if he notices it, without being prompted.
He ate french fries tonight. My standards have dramatically changed in light of having a child who doesn’t always want to eat anything at all, and is on the lower side of the growth charts. One thing motherhood has taught me is to be flexible and easy on myself about certain things.
Oh, it has taught me so much.
